olduse.net: Exploring 40 Years of Usenet History

Since 2025, Adam Sjøgren has kept olduse.net running as a tradition, adding another port each year with an increasing delay to simulate Usenet’s past. With ports like 11945 (currently) having a 45-year delay since its inception, users can experience the evolution of online discussions dating back decades ago. Despite occasional technical challenges such as updating router settings and restarting services, olduse.net continues to provide an engaging interactive journey into Usenet’s history.

The idea originated from Joey Hess’ original project (2011-2021), which replayed archived Usenet articles 30 years back in time through a news server and web interface. Adam initially created article.olduse.net to preserve accessibility to those old posts by storing them in a database, but after the original project ended, he obtained rights from Joey Hess to continue maintaining it.

Over time, this endeavor gained significance when many sites linked back to article.olduse.net during celebrations like the 30th anniversary of GNU’s announcement—highlighting its lasting relevance as a valuable resource for exploring internet history.\
