Navigating the Firefox Exodus: Exploring Alternatives and the Future of Open Source Browsers

In search for alternatives to Mozilla’s Firefox while remaining within open source ecosystem, consider Otter-Browser (otter-browser.org/) with its intent resembling old Opera 12. It offers features like automatic cookie deletion upon session close and easy website-specific settings adjustments such as disabling JavaScript. However, it lacks plugin support and development seems halted or slow since February 2022 according to GitHub records.

Distribution patches might mitigate some concerns regarding unwanted elements in browsers like Firefox; distributions such as Debian may address major issues while F-Droid handles mobile versions’ security aspects. Waterfox, a Firefox ESR variant with telemetry disabled and immune to certain bugs like “Foxstuck,” is another option worth considering due to its compatibility with various desktop environments including Unity, Xfce, etc., offering seamless integration into global menus.
