In a two and half month journey of intense research, development, and problem-solving, security researcher Ryan ‘PwnAlliance’ Cordero successfully discovered an exploit dubbed “Bad Update” to hack into Xbox 360 Hypervisor. This feat allowed him to bypass the console’s protection layers and gain root access.
The Bad Update exploit targets a race condition vulnerability in specific circumstances, making it time-consuming with only a moderate success rate of around 35%. Despite its limitations as an everyday hacking tool due to lengthy execution times and unreliability, this accomplishment showcases Cordero’s skillset and determination.
Cordero plans to retire from game console hacking for now but may share more insights about his journey in a future blog post covering failed attempts, interesting discoveries, and techniques learned during the process. He expresses gratitude towards everyone who supported him throughout this challenging endeavor.
